Bookish Halloween Costumes For Bookish People

Hello, Book Nerds! Welcome back to Reading Has Ruined My Life or welcome if you are new. As always, my name is Hannah and I am your captain on this journey into my bookcases.

Hi, how's it going today?

Except we aren’t diving into my bookcases today. I’m back with a Halloween tradition this week. For the third year in a row I bring you Halloween costume ideas inspired by your favorite books. If you haven’t planned a costume for this year yet, I have ya covered.

So let’s crack in. Bring on the costumes!

Dancing skeletons.

5. Kicking off the list this year is quite the undertaking. Cthulhu. If you can somehow make a Cthulhu costume, power to ya. I’d kill for your special effects and fabrication skills. Truthfully I have no idea how exactly you would go about making this beast of a costume, but I would love see pictures if you make one.

4. Do you remember The Bailey School Kids series? I wrote a review on this gem from the 90’s last year. The original covers are nothing short of iconic. And I think you should dress up as one of the “monsters.” I love a good thrifted Halloween costume so get out there and find a polka dot dress that matches Mrs. Jeepers’ fit from the cover of Vampires Don’t Wear Polka Dots. Mrs. Zork from Aliens Don’t Wear Braces also has a pretty iconic fit if that’s more your speed. It doesn’t matter who you choose to emulate cause there are so many good looks to choose from.

3. Next up may I present to you The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires by Grady Hendrix. We’re once again going thrifting. You need an 80’s mom fit, you need those mom jeans and shoulders pads, you need an 80’s wig teased to the gods, and you need garlic and a cross. Enjoy!

2. Perhaps a tad bit pretentious depending on who you dress up as, but dress as your favorite author or a famous author. In my head I’m thinking classic literature so someone like Shakespeare, Poe, or Shelley but you could dress as a more contemporary author like Stephen King, Agatha Christie, Alice Walker, or anyone really. The choice is yours. Perhaps I shall be pretentious this year and dress as the one and only Christine de Pizan.

1. Kalynn Bayron recently released a new book, Sleep Like Death, which I reviewed last week. In this book she returned to the world she created for Cinderella is Dead. I would love to see costumes based on the heroines of both novels. I wanna see cool Snow White and Cinderella costumes!

Thus endeth our list! Thank you very much for joining me today. I hope you’ve found an idea for your Halloween costume this year. If none of these have struck your fancy I will link the two previous years posts below. Perhaps something there will be perfect for you.

With that, I shall bid you all adieu. I will see you all again next week with a new review. If you can’t wait till then you can always check out my podcast Nothing to See Hear. I’ve done plenty of spooky episodes for you to check out and get you into the Halloween spirit.

Until next time, stay safe, wash your hands and read some good books for me.

See y'all then, bye!
